Captured “Otoniel”, the most wanted drug trafficker in Colombia

“Otoniel” was the head of a “clan” considered the most powerful in drug trafficking in Colombia. President Iván Duque has already reacted: “This is a coup… only comparable to the capture of Pablo Escobar”.

The drug trafficker most wanted by authorities in Colombia, Dairo Antonio Usuga, was arrested in the northwest of the country, the Colombian government announced this Saturday.

Dairo Antonio, 50 years old, also known as “Otoniel”, was detained in the coastal municipality of Necocli, near Panama and had one of the main strongholds of the so-called “Gulf Clan”.

“Otoniel” is one of the leaders of this clan, considered the most powerful in the drug trade in Colombia and the world’s largest exporter of cocaine formed by former elements of paramilitary groups.

This is a coup… only comparable to the capture of Pablo Escobar”, said President Iván Duque in a statement, confirming the arrest. Escobar, the founder and leader of the well-known Medellín cartel, died in a shootout in 1993.

The arrest of Daro Usuga represents “the biggest coup carried out by the Colombian government against organized crime in the country”, writes Agence France-Presse.

The United States even offered a reward of five million dollars (4.2 million euros) for the capture of “Otoniel”.

According to the independent think tank Indepaz, the “Gulf Clan” is present in 300 municipalities in Colombia.
