4K ProRes recording is only available on the 256GB iPhone 13

Apple yesterday presented the iPhone 13 and brought some innovations in the field of cameras and video capture. One of the main innovations that is only available in the iPhone 13 Pro line is the compatibility with the ProRes video compression format, a feature that Apple has devoted a lot of time to introduce the new generation of the iPhone 13 Pro. However, not all iPhones Pro will have access to this technology.

For no special reason, probably for device space reasons, 4K ProRes recording is only available on the 256GB iPhone 13.

iPhone 13 with 4K ProRes recording from 256 GB only

The iPhone 13 Pro is available with 128GB, 256GB, 515GB and now also 1TB storage. So, if you are thinking about buying the new iPhone 13 Pro, keep in mind that the possibility of recording in the ProRes format in 4K quality at 30 frames per second is limited to models with 256 GB.

As you can see in the specifications on Apple’s website, the 128 GB model is left out, a model that can only use this format in 1080p resolution.

Why this “limitation” on the cheaper iPhone 13 Pro?

Apple does not explain the reason for this limitation, but it is assumed that the company has considered that 128 GB of storage is not enough space to store the large files that are generated.

However, it could offer the possibility for the user to choose whether to use it or not, since for small projects it will not be necessary to have as much storage space. What is clear is that, following Apple’s philosophy, if the user wants to use 4K recording at 30fps, he will have to invest a little more in storage.

The price difference between the 128GB version of storage and the 256GB version is 120 euros, a price that, if you’re willing to pay the 1,179 euros for the 128GB iPhone 13 Pro or the 1,279 euros for the iPhone Pro Max with the same storage capacity, it will not involve a great economic effort.

Out of curiosity, the ProRes format offers high color fidelity while taking up relatively little space on the device, making it ideal for recording semi-pro or even professional projects. This is widely used in post-production workflows and can be easily exported to editors such as Final Cut Pro.

Finally, they probably didn’t realize it, but Apple mentioned that ProRes videos is an option that won’t be available right away. According to the company, it will be available “in a future iOS 15 update”.
