Secret services without conclusions about the origin of covid-19

The US president received an inconclusive US secret service report on Tuesday as to the origin of the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, local media reported.

According to The Washington Post, which quoted two unidentified officials, the document is the result of a 90-day investigation that Joe Biden asked US intelligence agencies in May.

Experts, despite analyzing the existing secret data and looking for new clues, could not reach a consensus on the origin of the virus, which could have been passed from animal to human or the product of a laboratory accident.

The secret services have indicated they will try to declassify elements of the report in the coming days for possible publication, the daily added.

Biden announced the investigation in May after a US secret service report found that several investigators at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in central China fell ill in November 2019 and had to be hospitalized, “The Wall Street Journal”.

The President explained that the US secret services were evaluating “two probable scenarios”: whether it resulted from human contact with an infected animal or a laboratory accident. On these two options, Biden said that two of the US intelligence services are inclined towards the first scenario and a third towards the laboratory idea.

In February, the US administration expressed dissatisfaction with the preliminary results of investigations carried out earlier this year by international experts in Wuhan to look for the possible origin of the pandemic and considered that Chinese authorities had withheld data from that mission. World Health Organization (WHO).

Experts then indicated, after four weeks of work in China, that the most likely hypothesis for the origin of the new coronavirus was that it had been transmitted to man from wild animals through one or more intermediate species.

However, the Republican opposition, led by former President Donald Trump, argued that covid-19 was generated in a Chinese laboratory.
