The measure, at first, is only for games organized by the AFA, but matches of Libertadores and South America may be affected; Conmebol, however, says that duels will happen normally.
A little more than 20 days before the start of the Copa America, the Argentine government announced strict measures against the advance of the coronavirus pandemic. So much so that the Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced on Friday the suspension of all games organized by the entity in the country until May 30.
The measure, at first, does not affect the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana games involving Argentine teams (Fluminense, for example, visits River Plate in Buenos Aires next Tuesday – see list below all matches) nor the Copa America. Conmebol, which is organizing these tournaments, said that the games are confirmed and that they will normally take place until further notice.
The new restrictions in Argentina, which will host the Copa America from June 13 (Colombia would be the co-host, but gave up due to its troubled political climate), were announced by President Alberto Fernández to try to contain what the government considers the worst phase of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.
Argentina is now the country with the most deaths per million inhabitants: 16.46. It even surpasses Brazil, which records 11.82 per million. Altogether 72,699 died in Argentina due to Covid-19, with 3,450,000 registered cases. Regarding vaccination, 2,150,000 people have already been fully immunized, representing 4.8% of the population.
“AFA has been collaborating with national, provincial and municipal authorities since March 20, 2020 in the development of health protocols aimed at caring for the football family and society in general, respecting each and every decision taken by ours. leaders and experts in epidemiology. So, at this time when our beloved country must make an extra effort to control this distressing pandemic that afflicts us, the AFA and all of us who make football will again accompany the national authorities, suspending the schedule of matches corresponding to all competitions. for a period of 9 days, ”says the AFA statement.
