European Commissioner considers Super League contrary to EU values

«We must defend a European model of sport based on values, based on diversity and inclusion», says Margaritis Schinas

European commissioner Margaritis Schinas said on Monday that the European Union should defend “a European model of sport based on diversity and inclusion”, opposing the project to create a European Super League announced by 12 clubs.

“We must defend a European model of sport based on values, based on diversity and inclusion”, reads in a message published on the official account of the social network Twitter by Margaritis Schinas.

The commissioner with the portfolio of the Promotion of the European Way of Life reacted thus to the project of creation of a European Super League, made on Sunday by 12 of the main clubs of Spain, England, and Italy, that intend to develop an elite competition, competitor of the League of Champions, and in opposition to UEFA.

Stressing that “there is no margin” for the European model of sport “to be reserved for the few rich and powerful clubs”, Schinas also says that these clubs “want to cut ties with everything that associations represent”, referring to ” national [football] leagues, promotions and relegations, and support for amateur football ».

“Universality, inclusion, and diversity are crucial elements in European sport and in our European way of life”, points out the official.

The statement from the 12 clubs comes on the same day that UEFA reaffirmed that it will exclude clubs that are part of a possible European football Super League, and that it will take “all the necessary measures, at the judicial and sports level” to prevent the creation of a “project” cynical”.

In the fight against the pretensions of some of the most powerful clubs in Europe, UEFA said it had the support of the England associations.
