“We are very focused on violent domestic extremism. It is our greatest threat, a terrorism-related threat. We are very focused on that, ”said Mayorkas in an interview with NBC News television.

The American Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, considered today that domestic extremism is currently the greatest terrorist threat in the United States.

“We are very focused on violent domestic extremism. It is our greatest threat, a terrorism-related threat. We are very focused on that, ”said Mayorkas in an interview with NBC News television.

The head of Homeland Security has ensured that officials in the department he runs continue to closely monitor these types of threats while facing the growing arrival of undocumented migrants from the border with Mexico.

On internal extremism, “we have already done a lot, but we have plans to do more,” he said.

Mayorkas mentioned last Tuesday’s shooting at three Asian massage establishments in Atlanta (Georgia), where eight people died, although he avoided associating the crime with terrorist acts.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims of the tragic murders in the Atlanta area,” he commented.

Early news of the shooting quickly linked him to the wave of hate crimes in the United States against people of Asian descent, but the suspect later admitted to authorities that he shot at these establishments because he “blamed” them for keeping their addiction active, saying who wanted to eliminate the temptation.

Several protests and vigils took place Saturday in several North American cities, such as Atlanta, New York, San Francisco, or Pittsburgh, to condemn racism against people of Asian origin, after the shootings in which six of the eight dead were women of this racial group.

The 21-year-old suspect, identified as Robert Aaron Long and who took responsibility for the three shootings, was detained some 250 kilometers south of Atlanta on his way to Florida, possibly for other similar crimes.
