In addition to the name change, the team has Alonso’s return and news among managers

Renamed after competing in Formula 1 since 2016 under the name of Renault, Alpine presented, this Tuesday, the A521, its car for the dispute of the 2021 season of the maximum category of world motorsport. Watch the video below:

The team continues with the status of the official factory team of the French automotive group and will have the return of two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, from Spain to the grid of the elite of motorsport.

The launch of the new model (see more photos below), whose name refers to the abbreviations of Renault machines in the 1970s, took place in a virtual event at the base of the French team in Enstone, in the United Kingdom, this Tuesday.

The name change from Renault to Alpine comes after the group opted to change the brand of its factory team in F1 as part of a restructuring of the automaker’s companies and assets.

The layout disclosure (photos below) comes after Alpine presented, in January, a provisional design incorporating the colors of the French flag, red, white, and blue, to black base paint. Such a scheme was used for private testing on older cars.

After taking fourth place in the constructors’ championship in 2018, Renault ‘stagnated’ in fifth place in the past two seasons. In 2020, however, three podiums were won, the first since returning to F1 as a factory team in 2016.

One was won by French driver Esteban Ocon, who made his debut for the team last year. The other two were registered by Daniel Ricciardo, who left the team at the end of 2020 after two years with the team from France.

The Australian went to McLaren and will be replaced by Alonso, who returns to F1 after a two-year hiatus. In the meantime, the driver was a world endurance champion, winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 24 Hours of Daytona, in addition to racing in the Indy 500 and Dakar.

The Spaniard’s contract runs until at least the end of 2022 and marks his third spell with the team, with which he ran between 2003 and 2006 and then between 2008 and 2009. Alonso was twice champion with Renault, in 2005 and 2006.

The pilot, however, was the great absence of the launch of the A521, since he is recovering from an accident suffered in Switzerland while riding a bicycle. He injured his jaw, but he is already well and should run normally in the pre-season.

Anyway, Alonso sent a message via an official statement: “I am extremely happy to be back in F1 after two years. I am very motivated for this new chapter with Alpine and of course, it is very special to be back in the team with which I achieved so much in The spirit is strong in the two factories, Enstone and Viry-Châtillon, and we look forward to what is to come. “

Ocon was also enthusiastic: “I am very excited to represent Alpine. I think it is great to see the changes in the team and new colors are always exciting. I already did my first race as an Alpine driver at the Monte Carlo Rally, which was a great way exciting to start the year. I have to say that I love the new colors and having the French flag in the car makes me proud. It’s great, it’s exciting and I think we’ll have a great season ahead of us ”.

In addition to Alonso, another big news is the arrival of Italian leader Davide Brivio, who commanded the Suzuki title in MotoGP in 2020. He will be the racing director and should lead the team alongside the Polish Marcin Budkowski.

The rearrangement also highlights Cyril Abiteboul’s departure from the team leadership. The Frenchman has been the team’s commander since 2016, but he no longer holds the position. The reserve pilot announced as the Russian Daniil Kvyat, owner of AlphaTauri in 2020.

Anyway, now the expectation is to see the Alpine A521 in its first prolonged appearance on the track at the beginning of the pre-season tests in Bahrain, which take place from 12 to 14 March.
