With dark blue highlighted, model AT02 will be piloted by French Pierri Gasly and Japanese Yuki Tsunoda
AlphaTauri announced on Friday morning the new model of the team for the 2021 season of Formula 1. Seventh place in the Constructors’ World Championship last year, won again by Mercedes (seven times champion), the Italian team will have as drivers the French Pierre Gasly and the Japanese Yuki Tsunoda at the head of the AT02, which has the prevalence of dark blue.
Gasly had his contract renewed after finishing 10th in the 2020 drivers’ championship and winning the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Tsunoda replaces Russian Daniil Kvyat, who was discharged at the end of last year.
– The decision for Pierre and Yuki in 2021 was taken because the Scuderia AlphaTauri philosophy is still to give talented young drivers from the RB Junior Program the opportunity to move up to F1 and educate them. With Pierre on Yuki’s side, we have an experienced driver who can help our Japanese rookie to develop faster, but at the same time, we can look for good results. I think this duo is the best possible scenario to achieve our goals, and I am also confident that it will be a success – said chef Franz Tost.

RBR’s reserve F1 driver last season, the 20-year-old Japanese was one of the highlights in the Formula 2 championship, won by Mick Schumacher (Prema), Haas’ new attraction. Since 2014, with Kamui Kobayashi, Japan had no representative in the main category.
– I was lucky enough to spend some time with Scuderia AlphaTauri before the season, so I’m already developing strong relationships and learning a lot from them – including Pierre, who is an incredible talent. My main goal is to learn quickly and deliver results as quickly as possible, and I’m very excited to start – said Tsunoda.
First team driver, Gasly hopes to get back to good places, but not in a circumstantial way, as in the victory at Monza, but more regularly:
– I am ready to assume the role of team leader. Yuki is a very fast driver and he will help us move the team forward – we will work together to achieve this. I really believe that last year was the best of the team in terms of how it worked, development, performance, and how it managed the race weekends. I’m always hungry for more and I’m sure we can achieve great things in 2021.
The 2021 Formula 1 season starts on March 28, with the Bahrain Grand Prix. Two weeks earlier, in the same country, the pre-season will be held.
