“El Mundo” publishes details of the bond, signed in 2017: Argentine star earns more than twice Neymar and has € 75 million (R $ 497 million) net per year
Madrid’s “El Mundo” newspaper published details of Lionel Messi’s contract with Barcelona. The vehicle stamped on its cover the total amount of the bond, signed in 2017 and ending in June this year: € 555,237,619, between fixed and variable amounts, for the four years.
At the current price, the value corresponds to R $ 3.6 billion. However, the exchange rate has undergone great variation since June 2017, when the current contract started. The document was signed under the management of President Josep Maria Bartomeu, who resigned in October last year.
Messi can earn up to € 138 million gross per year, between fixed and variable amounts. The net amount received by the ace can reach up to € 74.9 million, which is more than double the amount received at PSG by Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus.
The contract provided for the payment of € 115.2 million just because Messi accepted the renewal and another € 77.9 million for what the newspaper said was a concept of “loyalty”. According to “El Mundo”, Messi has already guaranteed 92% of the total offered in the document, that is, € 511 million, at the current price.
The daily published the entire list of variables, which include prizes for playing 60% of the matches of the season, classification for the Champions, place in the round of 16, quarter, semi, and final of the European competition. Being elected best in the world by FIFA also earns extra money for the star.
There are, of course, bonuses in the case of titles, with different amounts for each tournament. Winning the Champions League earns Messi, by the current contract, another € 4.1 million.
The details of the contract were confidential. The report does not provide details on Barcelona’s financial gains with Messi on the field, for example. Barça is experiencing a serious financial crisis, with € 1 billion in debt, and will go through elections in March.
Leaking contract details could influence Messi’s decision whether or not to follow Barcelona. The Argentine has a bond only until June this year and, since January 1st, can sign a pre-contract with another club
